Tips on How to Stop Your Dog From Jumping on You When You Get Home

Everyone loves to see how happy our dogs are to see us come home.  They are almost contagious.  I know even my sister's dog gets overly excited when her owner comes home.  It's cute how the dog jumps up to greet its master.  I only wish I could stop her from doing that.  She's so happy to see us she hardly knows what to do and this could be a problem.  For some reason she has decided to jump on my cousin who is a better taller man.  What my cousin doesn't know is that the dog is trying to say hello.  My cousin could have also been threatened by the dog and it's displays of aggression are getting worse.  My cousin has been avoiding my cousin at times and has been trying to avoid me as well.  How do I know this?  She avoided me while I was still trying to figure out what myorder was.  She was muzzled for three months because she threatened to bite me.  I know what your thinking here, but if you want a long-term solution to this problem than we need to think about why the dog is jumping in the first place.

Many times dogs jump up on people because they want attention and the only way they are going to get that is by jumping.  The dog might also be trying to show off its dominance or dominance over the person.  These are reasons why dogs jump on people.  The reason we need to stop the dog from jumping on us is not to respect their silence.  We need to acknowledge that the dog is jumping because it is being happy and display its nature.

The dog is jumping up on you because it is very clear to your dog what he is doing is making you happy.  You are connecting with the dog and it is getting attention.  You definitely want to reward the dog for making you happy.  That's what all this is about.  You have to think about what the dog is thinking, not what the dog is doing.  You have to super command your dog to make sure that it knows the difference between good behavior and bad behavior.

You can start by telling the dog to get off you and then position him or her in the "off" direction.  You can tell your dog this by commanding it to sit or lay down and make it walk in a different direction.  You should also say "off" as you do this.  Having done this you can now return to your dog and tell him or her "good"  or "bad".  Praise your dog using a very happy tone of voice.  It is very important not to discipline your dog if you do not see it doing something it shouldn't be doing.  Remember, discipline is paying attention to what is making your dog happy, doing the right thing, and ignoring the wrong thing.  Discipline will take time and a lot of energy, too, but if you don't have both of those things, you need to give up.

You need to understand that you are the top dog and you need to make sure your dog knows this.  Dogs are very happy when they know their status, but if your dog thinks it is "top dog" it becomes very difficult to do anything else.  You can let the dog know it is bottom dog by making it move down to its level before you pet or praise it.  You can also say things like "down" or "lay" instead of "off".  It may sound silly to have your dog say "down" to its paws but it is keeping the praise with you.

These are some important things to keep in mind if you decide to try to stop your dog from jumping on you or anyone else.  Having a firm voice may help, but don't yell all the time or you will just scare your dog.  Some people make the mistake of treating their dog like a person in a dog suit.  This is never a good idea as it is unnatural and unnatural praise and attention for a dog.  Treats and Rewards should only be given to your dog in appreciation for a job well done.  When you are trying to teach your dog to stop jumping on you, be patient and have some patience.  We all want to be pleased.
